Hassle Hop from the Burleigh Brewing Company

FROM the Burleigh Brewing Company’s A Bit on the Side department comes another unusually named but wonderfully delicious drop, Hassle Hop.

No, this beer is not a tribute to the Baywatch star, but is a well-balanced blend of five different hops that combine to produce a pale ale offering a number of different qualities.

It is more in the style of American pale ales, with a wonderfully fragrant nose, plenty of flavour and body but with enough bitterness in the after taste to make this a very satisfying drop.

It has a great, tight white head, with a slightly cloudy copper appearance and an aroma that combines a number of fruit notes with a hint of citrus.

It is smooth and a little creamy across the palate but delivers plenty of body and flavour to every part of your mouth, and it’s not too gassy.

What is very appealing is the finish is more like an Indian pale ale with a good degree of bitterness, which draws you back with ease.

You may find yourself cleaning your mouth with your tongue, ready for the next sip/mouthful and therefore this ale has great sessionability.

It’s no lightweight at 6.5 per cent and while it is a little heavier than some other pales on the market, it doesn't make you feel bloated after a few.

I might suggest this with some spicy foods, in particular Mexican food or some Middle Eastern dishes.

This is a very refreshing beer and versatile enough to be enjoyed in any season. This pale ale has character and balance without being something that tries to appeal to a multitude of tastes. My money is that the Hoff would gladly hop into this drop.

MY TIP: Serve this in a tulip or balloon-type glass to appreciate the various qualities it presents. It’s a beer to share with friends, but make sure they appreciate a good drop because at $10 per 650ml bottle through Dan Murphys, it’s not a beer to squander.
