THE good folks at the Burleigh Brewing Company continue to add to an already
impressive trophy cabinet, picking two awards at the Royal Brisbane Show beer judging.
Brewer Brenna Fielding and his wife Peta were delighted to pick up ……. and ……. for what Brenna calls his “quite achiever” – Hefeweizen wheat beer.
Hef (as it is more commonly know), like so many wheat beers, might be confronting to mainstream ale drinkers, offering up a distinctive aroma and flavour found in many traditional style Bavarian beers.
Hef is cloudy in appearance with a good white head and has a hop/fruit note to its aroma.
You may even pick up on a hint of cloves – I had to look at Brennan’s tasting notes to determine what the ‘mystery’ element was that I was smelling.
It has plenty of body as you would expect from a wheat beer, you can pick up on the
wheat/barley flavours coming through without too much bitterness in the aftertaste.
It is smooth across the palate and definitely has a moorish aftertaste which draws you back.
Hef is a beer with character and would be well suited to a wide range of foods, such is its versatility but I would suggest some good flavour some sausages or pork with crackling but you might even want to try it with some seafood dishes – the choice is endless.
People who aren’t familiar with wheat beers may find the flavour challenging but it is a beer which which grows on you and the judges at the Brisbane Show obviously thought with the Hef claiming the trophies over some pretty high profile competition.
At 5 per cent, it’s a heavy beer (and in more ways than one) and can be ‘filling’.
One thing can be said for Hef – it’s an award-winning beer for all seasons and one
Burleigh Brewing should be justifiably proud of.
MY TIP
Serve Hef nice and cold and preferably in a tulip shaped glass to appreciate the
interesting aroma. It’s a beer to sit back and enjoy rather than throwing a few down and don’t be afraid to try it a variety of foods. It’s widely available around the Coast through national liquor chains and at ….for a 330ml six pack, why not taste the reason why it’s an award winner?
