Given that beer is such a worldly beverage, it's only natural to look for a drop which represents a different part of the world and so, when I came across Quilmes Cerveza from Argentina, I thought ahh, South America, never tried any of their beers before.
Now cerveza (as we ardent beer drinkers should know) means beer in many Spanish orientated languages but you pronounce this beer as "kill mess".
Since I am more familiar with beer from Europe and the Orient, it was with considerable interest to try something from South America.
Quilmes claims to be Argentina's favourite beer so it has lot to live up to.
It is a golden straw colour, clean in appearance with a tight white head and a slightly bitter, hop aroma.
Quilmes is smooth and slightly creamy at first with no distinct flavour that "hit" you.
You might even be a little disappointed at first but by retaining it in your mouth before swallowing, you'll pick up a refreshing hop note to it and it leaves with you with a slightly bitter aftertaste which is ideal for the warm weather.
The subtle way the flavour grows on you adds to its appeal and sessionability and being a lager style beer, it doesn't sit heavily in the gut.
However this is no lightweight at 4.9 percent, it's slightly stronger than our normal full strength beers but it doesn't have a noticeable kick but just be aware you are drinking a strong beer here.
It's a cleansing type of beer and well-suited to summer foods such as a Thai beef salad, or fresh seafood or even some light spicy Asian dishes.
It's not out of place at a barbeque either, particularly with some herb spiced sausages.
For those who don't like a real "pronounced" flavour to their beers but are looking for something to quench the thirst, Quilmes is definitely worth trying.
It's an easy drinking beer and after more than two and you'll be right to tango!
MY TIP
Definitely serve nice and cold and it's a beer which you can appreciate either in a pilsner glass or straight from the stubbie. At around $16 per 330ml six pack at major chains like First Choice, it's worth trying.
