Sassy Red from Mac's Brewery

THERE’S nothing quite like a Sassy Red to spice up your day – or that’s what Kiwi brewer Mac’s would have you believe.

Their latest products to reach Australian markets from ‘across the ditch’ is the interestingly named Sassy Red which is intriguing ale full of flavour.

A rich ‘plum’ in colour with a good creamy head, Sassy Red offers up a malt/hop bouquet with just a slight hint of fruitiness.

One thing Mac’s didn’t do was scrimp on the hops and this full bodied drop boasts Saaz hops which may account for the aroma and while there is an undeniable malt richness that comes through, the Red leaves you with a nice bitter aftertaste which is distinctive but not overpowering.

You can really appreciate the malts with a good mouthful and this makes it quite smooth across the palate.

Because of its nature and make-up, this isn’t one of your lighter beers – sitting in the stomach – but it isn’t so heavily as to make you feel full after one of two.

At 4.3 percent, it’s a full strength beer and the flavour may not suit those who prefer the lighter tasting beers.

In fact, the aftertaste draws you back, adding to its sessionability.

It’s a beer which I think you might prefer to sit and enjoy with friends rather than having as big session on.

As for what you might enjoy food wise with this, I might suggest that considering the malt levels, this might be well-suited to dishes like a good fruit curry or even pork with apple sauce.

However I would be equally as happy sitting back with some good music, a gentle breeze and friends and just getting a bit ‘sassy’.

MY TIP

Nice and cold is the order of the day for this drop. It’s not a thirst quencher style of beer so serve it in a tulip shape or balloon glass to appreciate the aroma and colour. It’s definitely a ‘laid back’ ale. At around $18 per six pack of unique Macs 330ml stubbies, it’s ideal to unwind with and can be found or ordered through the major outlets.
