PORT Stephens craft brewer Murray's has launched it first Golden Ale in a bottle, Moon Boy, and it's bound to take off with discerning beer drinkers in this sector of the universe.
Despite having an odd name, Moon Boy is definitely no space cadet when it comes to a refreshing, easy drinking ale, which I think is suitable all year round.
As the name suggests, it has a good clear dark golden appearance with a tight white head that lingers in the glass.
The aroma serves up a citrus nose at first with a hint of hops coming through.
Moon Boy delivers good flavour from the outset with a slight creaminess to the body.
However, this gives way to a fresh crispness and a very more-ish bitterness in the aftertastes, which readies the palate for the next mouthful.
It is light in nature but not in alcohol and at 4.5 per cent, is a full-strength beer that isn't imposing – nor does it sit heavily in the gut.
For those who enjoy the more subtle pale ales – ones that don't present strong hop flavours, Moon Boy is right on the money. In fact, I might even go so far as to say it is a quasi pilsner-pale hybrid (but you might not agree).
It is definitely a great thirst quencher on a hot day and it has very good sessionability.
There's good character to this, not as pronounced as some other more hoppy beers on the markets but it will have broad appeal to those looking for a something refreshing.
It would go well with fresh seafood or a chicken or seafood caesar salad. It would be well worth your while to see if Moon Boy has landed at a bottle shop near you.
MY TIP:
Serve this up nice and cold in a tulip or balloon glass to appreciate the aroma. At about $16 for a 330ml four pack, it's venturing into the premium market at major retail chains and selected outlets.
