THERE are a few perks that come with this job and one is the opportunity to sample beers which you mightn't normally come across. One such beer was the Hahn Bacon Beer - I kid you not.
Yes, those crazy guys at Hahn came up with a beer with a bacon flavour in it after suggestions to their Hahn Beer Academy website. The result - bloody genius!
The bad part is that is was a strictly limited, not for retail release so you are going to have to take my word for it.It is a full bodied beer at 5.5% with a delicious bronze colour and a cream/coffee head. What was surprising was that it didn't have a rich bacon aroma, more hop/malt than anything with just the slightest hint of bacon.
The first mouthful doesn't really hit you with pork product flavours either but like any quality crafted beer, you soon pick up on a wonderful smoked bacon flavour coming through on a smooth, rich beer which clings to the inside of your mouth.
That becomes even more apparent in the aftertaste and being such a strong beer, you can feel a warm glow as it goes down. For those who have tried the Malt Shovel Mad Brewers' Squibbly Gum, this Hahn Bacon Beer has similar smoked qualities.
While I would be satisfied with this on its own (which I was), it would be a great accompaniment with pork belly or a good tasty cheese. It was strong a delightful and a beer to sit a savour, not quaff down.
However it also might be a bit too extreme for those looking for more conventional flavours in their beers. What needs to be done now, for those who see this as the perfect beer, there needs to be a huge campaign to get Hahn to mass produce it.
Just imagine, a beer you could have at breakfast with eggs!
MY TIP
Get on the Hahn website at www.hahn.com.au and plead with them to make more - either that or suggest your own unique flavoured beer!
