The Grand Hotel is situated on the foreshore of Thursday Island, fondly called T.I. It's a hilly little island approximately 25ha in area with its deepwater port is the centre for almost all the activities of the Torres Strait.
The original Grand Hotel c.1890, was destroyed by fire in 1993 and unfortunately a great deal of history went down with it. Somerset Maughan is believed to have written a few short stories from the verandah of the old hotel whilst enjoying a gin sling, and taking in the spectacular view of the Torres Strait.
Today, the view is just as captivating. The facilities and amenities have improved with the construction of the New Grand Hotel.

Pizzas are good. All the rest .better go elsewhere. Especially if you are vegetarian. Then they just don't want you.
Regarding the hotel... Far from advertised. For example they advertise free wifi. But mean only 3 hours per day. If you come to work.. Don't count on them

When they have pizzas (2 nights a week), it is OK , even good. BUT- it is only 2 nights a week. All the rest and all lunches- there is nothing. Here is the strange thing- they offer salads as side dishes. But you can not buy one on its own.
Also- if you need to work and need a power outlet- forget it. There is one only!
So my advice is – go to Uncle Frankie’s. Better food, better prices.
