Located close to Elizabeth Street Mall, this cafe and bar is popular with the after-work set. Live bands provide chilled sounds every Thursday and Friday nights.
The inn was originally operated as a hotel and a meeting place for travelers commuting from around the state. Travelers waited in the cold grey hour of 5am outside the inn to be picked up by a horse drawn carriage for the journey to Launceston. This trip took over 14 hours.
Over the years the hotel has seen many face lifts and a few name changes, with the most major being in 1999 when the “Ship Hotel” was completely renovated and updated into a modern Café Bar.
In July 2006, the Central Bar & Café evolved once again with the complete guttering of the entire top floor and the development of eleven stylish rooms.
Hobart is steeped in history such as this and every building could tell a thousand stories of days gone by. We hope that you enjoy your stay at Central Bar & Café in Hobart.

Great place to stay!!
I was lucky enough to walk into this place looking for a place to stay after I had a bad accommodation experience in Hobart. Staff could not do enough for me. I stayed 3 nights in November, '08, and was spoilt. All staff were attentive, helpful and friendly. Scott, Manager and Scott, chef did a great job to ensure my stay was one I won't forget! Great food too!!
