William Creek Hotel stands out like a oasis in the desert. Along the Oodnadatta Track, about halfway from Oodnadatta to Maree and halfway from Adelaide to Alice Springs, the William Creek Hotel was built in 1887 to service the Ghan railway line that travelled between Alice Springs and Adelaide.
William Creek is famous for its "William Creek Hotel". You can stop here to have a cold drink or a meal and to look at the unique interior. The William Creek Hotel provides drinks and refreshments for travelling tourists. Meals and accommodation are available for those who wish stay a little longer.
William Creek is South Australia's smallest town. The town is surrounded by one of Australia's largest cattle properties, Anna Creek Station which is almost half the size of Tasmania.
The old Ghan railway, which passed through William Creek, ran from Port Augusta via Quorn, Hawker, Parachilna, Copley, Farina, Marree, Curdimurka, William Creek and Oodnadatta to Alice Springs. Construction of this narrow gauge line started in 1878. The old Ghan line was used for the last time in October 1980, but the William Creek Hotel lives on.

william creek hotel - ooodnadatta track
This is a 5 Akubra Outback Delight. Food, Fun, Fantastic people, Clean cabins, great camping – this place is bringing it all together. Noel and Ngarie have brought all their experience to bear and dragged this hotel up out of the tired morass it was in. They have recruited some of the most customer focused staff I’ve come across starting with Lyndal who’s the voice on the phone and face behind reception. Renae and Manou keep the cabins and camp area spot on ad the gusts/visitors happy (but even they can’ do much about the flies ( get a head net) while Jarrod is my Outback Barista of the Year and runs a good restaurant. In the kitchen Liz and Scott meet all the promises of the menu and prepare food that is a surprise, because of the location, and a delight. Selection was excellent and prices reasonable given the challenging location. Noel and Rod are great to talk to and full of information. And….they’re prepared to tackle bush repairs and recoveries for travellers who push the boundaries too hard or have car/trailer trouble. Summing up - . .. a real find – if you’re out that way and pass it by you’ll be missing a great experience. I’m going to detour and visit again on the way to the centre later in the year.
