NESTLED away at Tamborine Village on the western side of Tamborine Mountain behind the Gold Coast lies one of the best-kept beer secrets in southeast Queensland – the Beard and Brau Farmhouse Brewery.
Run by Chris Herring and Tanya Harlow, this boutique brewery is responsible for some exceptional beers and among them is their Red Tail Amber Ale.
Brewed in a traditional manner (as is all their beers), the Red Tail is the perfect drop now that the mercury is starting to drop. It has a rich, dark copper appearance with a solid white head and an enticing aroma that reveals malts with a subtle chocolate, almost toffee note.
As with all good amber ales, this is full bodied and doesn't disappoint from the first mouthful, being smooth and slightly creamy across the palate and offering a well-balanced blend of malt with a hint of sweetness, which comes across in a slight roasted chocolate flavour.
There’s a subtle bitterness in the after taste that helps prepare you for the next mouthful and in that regard, this has great seasonability.
Being an amber ale, it is slightly heavier than your regular beers but it doesn't make you feel bloated. It is very much a full-strength brew at 5.1 per cent but it isn't confronting in its alcohol strength, which also makes this a sneaky little drop – it can creep up on you. It would be ideal for a hearty stew, roast beef or simply to unwind at the end of the day. At this time of the year, it will also help warm you up.
This is a quality drop that can be kept secret no longer. Their beer is already well-known is some parts of South Australia, now it’s the rest of the country’s turn to discover them. If you enjoy amber ales, try this and help spread the word!
MY TIP
THIS needs to be cold but definitely not chilled. I’d recommend a balloon-type glass to enjoy this to the fullest, especially the aroma for the total experience.
