ONCE upon a time there was The Little Brewing Company who took on the 'big boys' and came away on top with a wonderful drop called Mad Abbot Abbey Ale.
This dark beer with the strange name might come in a small bottle but is big in flavour and big in alcohol content.
However it is deceptively easy to drink and regardless of the fact that it is potent ale (8 percent) you don't notice it.
The Little Brewing Company is based in Port Macquarie and its Mad Abbot Ale is advertised as a limited release.
With a rich dark ruby red colour, a wonderful creamy head and a full bodied bouquet which hints of a rich, dark fruity nature to the beer. It is surprisingly smooth across the palate and the aftertaste is a touch sweet but not overbearing - it still has a little hint of bitterness which has you coming back for more.
While Mad Abbot has great sessionability - you will find it hard to stop at one, especially if you fancy dark beers, it isn't a beer that you could have a big session on.
It isn't as bitter as an old and is more like a porter in nature.
I find this to be an excellent colder weather beer and one which is a little heavier in the gut than others.
That said, it's not like a rich stout that hits the gut like a lead weight.
This ale would go well with a strong cheese but it would equally be matched to a rich desert like a sticky date pudding (believe it or not!) or a great way to finish a sit -down dinner.
It's an ideal beer to sit down with a good mate or two and ponder the ways of the world because after a few of these, you could be talking about anything.
The brewer says that this ale is cellared three months before being released and it can be put down and 'aged' for up to five years but I don't think you could keep it that long!
MY TIP
I think this is a great winter drop and needs to be cold but not chilled. Serve it in a balloon glass to appreciate the aroma and unique colour. It's an ideal beer to unwind and relax to or to end an evening with but be warned at 8 percent per 330ml stubbie, this little bugger can pack a big punch that will sneak up on you.
It's not cheap either at around $23 plus postage for a four pack, it's an extravagance but you can always say "the Abbot made me do it!" Check out The Little Brewing Company at www.thelittlebrewingcompany.com.au
